How would Brexit affect Fashion?

Image from Pinterest

Its not often that my blog gets political, but as a young person with strong left-wing beliefs, I think its important to get engaged, and what better outlet than Urbanity? Don’t worry, I’m not going off on a rant, this is relevant to fashion, and very pertinent this week as Thursday we all vote on Britain’s future in the European Union. I wanted to explore how a ‘Leave’ vote would affect my own future, and that of the UK fashion industry, so was interested to read some articles on The Business Of Fashion about how Brexit might affect brands.

Urban Outfitters Controversy

As much as any other millennial wannabe hipster, I love a good browse in Urban Outfitters, although for my skint self it’s usually solely in the sale section. I have some great pieces of clothing from the American fashion and lifestyle store (which also owns Anthropologie), and really enjoy the selection of lingerie, books and homeware.  However, I am sure you are all aware of several controversial products they have released over the past few years that have caused a hell of a stir on social media. And encouraged many people like me to boycott and campaign against Urban Outfitters. Check out their top three most risqué collections below.

I also strongly recommend a read of ‘Mental Health is not A Fashion Statement‘ by blogger Frankly Ms Shankly, slamming online retailer Rad for their equally ignorant slogan tees.

Gucci Rip Off

London based designer Diane Goldie creates bespoke ‘wearable art‘ inspired by female empowerment and individuality. Her work, now three years in the making, consists of unique handmade or upcycled clothing and accessories in bright colours and textures; fusing a melting pot of cultures and personalities together,, creating what she thinks creativity in London is all about. I urge you to check out some of her work at, along with her intelligent and insightful writing at
Anyway, I divulge from what this post is really about. Gucci, one of the most successful high-end Italian fashion labels in history, has recently revamped their aesthetic, to a patchwork quilt of quirkiness and colour, inspired by London style tribes (see here). And Diane realised she’d been ripped off.

Couture creations by Viktor & Rolf

Last week, my friend showed me luxury fashion label Viktor & Rolf’s instagram page and it was no ordinary fashion social media. They have recently been posting backstage editorial pictures and videos from their Performance of Sculptures Haute Couture Spring/Summer 2016 show, and oh boy are they incredible. Essentially, the clever couturiers have crafted out-of-this world sculptural pieces from the simple idea of a basic white polo shirt. Read on to see the amazing collection, as words can barely describe the crazy creativity of this project! Fashion. Is. Art.
